Song of the Day 1/15: Steely Dan, “With a Gun”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment, National by on January 15, 2021 4 Comments

How do wingnut Congresswomen go to Congress? That’s right, with a gun. This isn’t one of the Dan’s more celebrated tunes; it was hidden in the middle of side 2 of “Pretzel Logic” and is generally regarded, even among fans, as Becker and Fagan doing a parody of the Byrds but not really pulling it […]

A couple of idle thoughts: I still can’t get over the fact that six out of seven Rethuglican state senators voted against a resolution congratulating Delaware’s first elected President. Did those two Laurel rioters ride to (and maybe from) DC on a bus chartered by the Delaware Rethuglican Party? If I were a reporter, I’d […]

Pence Front Runner for 2024 GOP Pres Nomination

Looks like Pence has slipped his head out of the literal and figurative noose. The “acting President” has been reviewing the troops and filling the ceremonial vacuum created by trump’s early abdication of his presidential responsibilities.

That makes him the odds on favorite to snag the 2024 nomination.

Song of the Day 1/14: Dandy Livingstone, “Rudy, a Message to You”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on January 14, 2021 5 Comments

Most rock fans know this song because The Specials reached No. 10 in the UK with a cover in 1979. This is the original rocksteady version by Jamaican-born British singer Dandy Livingstone. He moved to England in the late ’60s and recorded more than a dozen albums between 1967, when “Rudy, a Message to You” […]

General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Thursday, January 14, 2021

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on January 14, 2021 9 Comments

You can’t have a progressive tax system without progressive legislators. Progressives were in short supply during the terms of Governors Pete DuPont, Mike Castle and Tom Carper. Revenue was not in short supply.  Which is why the three governors and the General Assembly fervently embraced ‘bracket consolidation’, which is a euphemism for ‘ensuring that the […]

Crowdsourcing Ideas for Inauguration Night

Filed in National by on January 14, 2021 12 Comments

I want to do something communal to celebrate Biden’s inauguration. People are sick of Zoom, but a Zoom toast to Joe, to America? I don’t know. It is corny, and I’d much rather be in DC on the mall whooping it up with my fellow patriots but that will have to wait.

So is anybody doing anything?

Can we all jam out wi the same song and our doors and windows open?

Any and all ideas are welcome.

Open Thread 1/14/21: A Message to You, Rudy

Who didn’t see this coming, except everybody? Donald Trump told aides not to pay Rudy Giuliani. This is a surprise on the order of the sun rising in the general vicinity of the East. I’ve noticed something odd about conservatives. They’re suspicious of everyone except the people who are actually ripping them off. In further […]

Song of the Day: Richard Thompson, “Oops I Did It Again”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment, National by on January 13, 2021 2 Comments

Congrats, Donnie Two Scoops, you’re the first guy to do that getting impeached thing again. When a magazine asked Richard Thompson for a list of the best popular songs of the past 1,000 years, he responded by releasing a live double LP of the tunes he selected. Many of them are old — really old […]

Claire Snyder-Hall Back at Common Cause and Ready to Kick Ass

Filed in National by on January 13, 2021 9 Comments

One of DL’s favorite progressives, Claire Snyder-Hall is back in Delaware and back to heading up Common Cause.   Recently, I had a chance to do a quick online interview with Claire to fill in some of my knowledge gaps about Common Cause.  Me:  Claire, what are your plans and goals now that you are […]

Delaware Should Restrict, or Better Yet Ban, Open Carry

Filed in Delaware, National by on January 13, 2021 4 Comments

Gun-humpers are prematurely ejaculating over their chance to carry guns to statehouses on Jan. 20, and they can do that for a very simple reason: Only three states ban all forms of openly carrying firearms. More than half the states, including Delaware, allow open carry with no restrictions at all. Other states place limits on […]

General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Wednesday, January 13, 2021

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on January 13, 2021 2 Comments

The virtual pageantry is over, the leaders and committees have been made official, and both chambers are ready for action.  Not, of course, w/o some protest votes from the toothless Senate Rethugs: Sens. Colin Bonini, R-Dover; Bryant Richardson, R-Seaford; Dave Wilson, R-Lincoln; and Sen. Lawson voted against a resolution establishing Senate rules because a provision […]

Mad Props For LBR

Filed in Featured, National by on January 13, 2021 5 Comments

This video has gone, pardon the expression, viral. As well it should. You can see the barely-contained smirk on the face of QAnon Conspirator Marjorie Taylor Greene.  My favorite line?: “Don’t do yourself any favors.” These assholes have infected at least three members of Congress.  Meaning, of course, that at least one of them is […]

BREAKING?

Lots of fucking impeachment news overnight. Ive been waiting for “the other shoe to drop” for 4 years, so I didn’t stay up to follow it.   Did other shoes rain down roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream?   If so, good.    If not – here is what I knew as of bedtime:

  • McConnell is now in favor of impeachment. Not so fast.   Nobody is saying that.
  • McConnell is now in favor of kicking Trump to the curb. Probably.
  • McConnell is a devious fucking devil working some game? Absolutely

The good news for America is that if it is true that McConnell is trying to “get rid of the President and Trumpism from the Republican Party” then there will be no Republican Party when this is all over.

McConnell believes impeachment push will help rid Trump from the GOP, but has not said if he will vote to convict

Washington (CNN) Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated that he believes that impeaching President Donald Trump will make it easier to get rid of the President and Trumpism from the Republican Party, according to a source with knowledge of the matter.

Another person with direct knowledge told CNN there’s a reason McConnell has been silent on impeachment as other Republicans have pushed back: he’s furious about last week’s attack on the US Capitol by the President’s supporters, even more so that Trump has shown no contrition. His silence has been deliberate as he leaves open the option of supporting impeachment.

– Trump may be able to avoid prison, but there is no way he isn’t going to die a broke ass, loser.
– Should Delaware Schools go back to in person teaching?
So much lovely open thread below the fold.
