Song of the Day 1/18: The Ronettes, “Be My Baby”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on January 18, 2021 0 Comments

Phil Spector, the groundbreaking record producer and paranoid murderer who died yesterday at age 81, made an indelible mark on the recording industry by inventing the Wall of Sound. It doesn’t sound that complicated — just turn everything up to 11, right? — but when Phil Spector built his wall, he had just two tracks […]

DL Open Thread 1/18/21: Biden’s Looming War on Republican Mendacity and Stupidity & Happy MLK Day

Filed in National by on January 18, 2021 15 Comments

The Delaware Senate Republicans who refused to congratulate Biden and Harris are awful, but the statement on why they voted against a simple bit of civility and decency is appalling beyond measure.  It has the hallmarks of being written by the very appallingly smarmy creep, Anthony Delcollo.

It is meant to signal that Democrats interested in governing and proper order will find only hatred and bitterness if they expect to work with Republicans.  I think we have to the votes, and I hope we have the political will  to utterly ignore these fucking assholes.   They are sorely in need of being judged by the content of thier character.

Why 6 Delaware Republicans refused to congratulate, express support for Joe Biden

This is a good companion to that Delaware story.   Ultimately the American experiment in self-government comes down to people having a bit of character.

Song of the Day 1/17: The Circle Jerks, “When the Shit Hits the Fan”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on January 17, 2021 0 Comments

Though the song was written about America under Reagan, its core message remains true today: We all gotta duck when the shit hits the fan. The Circle Jerks formed in 1979 when vocalist Keith Morris left Black Flag and guitarist Greg Hetson from Redd Kross joined him. They became a seminal LA punk band, cited […]

DL Open Thread 1/17/21: Delusional Dotard Delusional to the Last

I’m not holding my breath expecting America to come to grips with what it was, is and shall become, so I expect people to deny until death the fact that this was a planned — poorly planned, but planned nonetheless — attempt to steal the election, followed by a poorly planned coup when the theft […]

Trump Years Didn’t Really Put a Hurting on DEGOP Registration

Filed in National by on January 16, 2021 14 Comments

I’m a little bit surprised to find that DEGOP registration growth tracks with Democrats. Although the DEGOP has fallen to third party status in many DE Rep District – the Trump years shit show didn’t cause the widespread abandonment of the DEGOP that one would expect.

Song of the Day 1/16: Dinosaur Jr., “Start Choppin'”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on January 16, 2021 0 Comments

I have learned over the years that J. Mascis is an acquired taste that a lot of people failed to acquire, but this breakup song comes as close to mass appeal as he ever got. It delivers power-trio punch highlighted by Mascis’ searing solos in a song that’s as melodic as anything he ever wrote. […]

Baghdad On The Potomac.  Complete with its own Green and Red Zones: In an unprecedented move, the Mall and much of the surrounding area is closed to the public days ahead of next week’s presidential inauguration. Hundreds of thousands of spectators typically watch the ceremonies, but this year, the Secret Service has launched a massive […]

The Delaware Republican Party Sickens Me

The Delaware Republican Party Sickens Me

Prior to last Wednesday the Capitol had never been occupied by the domestic terrorist and homegrown enemies of the United States of American. The seat of government had never been defiled by the enemies of the Constitution claiming to be patriots.

It wasn’t strong locks on the doors that keep those enemies out. It was the fact enemies of America were not welcomed into our political parties. The enemies of decency have always been with us, they just hadn’t ever been encouraged and supported by a political party. The thing that kept our democracy running since June 21, 1788, and kept the Capitol un-occupied was the fact that we all agreed that elections sometimes have outcomes that we don’t like. The thing that kept our peace and prosperity since the country’s inception is the idea that we agree on basic questions of civics and common decency.

So when Republican traitors in the DEGOP boarded buses to take part in the coup attempt, they were not fighting for some noble principle. They are fighting for childishness and shortsightedness. They are fighting for their right to be peevish, selfish and stupid.

Song of the Day 1/15: Steely Dan, “With a Gun”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment, National by on January 15, 2021 4 Comments

How do wingnut Congresswomen go to Congress? That’s right, with a gun. This isn’t one of the Dan’s more celebrated tunes; it was hidden in the middle of side 2 of “Pretzel Logic” and is generally regarded, even among fans, as Becker and Fagan doing a parody of the Byrds but not really pulling it […]

A couple of idle thoughts: I still can’t get over the fact that six out of seven Rethuglican state senators voted against a resolution congratulating Delaware’s first elected President. Did those two Laurel rioters ride to (and maybe from) DC on a bus chartered by the Delaware Rethuglican Party? If I were a reporter, I’d […]

Pence Front Runner for 2024 GOP Pres Nomination

Looks like Pence has slipped his head out of the literal and figurative noose. The “acting President” has been reviewing the troops and filling the ceremonial vacuum created by trump’s early abdication of his presidential responsibilities.

That makes him the odds on favorite to snag the 2024 nomination.

Song of the Day 1/14: Dandy Livingstone, “Rudy, a Message to You”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on January 14, 2021 5 Comments

Most rock fans know this song because The Specials reached No. 10 in the UK with a cover in 1979. This is the original rocksteady version by Jamaican-born British singer Dandy Livingstone. He moved to England in the late ’60s and recorded more than a dozen albums between 1967, when “Rudy, a Message to You” […]
