Song of the Day 9/27: Jackson C. Frank, “Blues Run the Game”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on September 27, 2019 1 Comment

Jackson C. Frank was an American folk singer who, like Paul Simon and a few others, moved to London shortly after the “British Invasion.” He met Simon there and impressed him so much that Simon offered to produce an album for him. It was released in 1965. This is the title track, which Simon and […]

DL Open Thread 9/27

Well, that was fast. One hearing in and already come the complaints that the Democrats are doing it wrong. Much gnashing of teeth over the GOP’s Sgt. Schultz routine — they see nossing, nossing that requires impeachment — but many reacted with less than the usual fervor. Those of us who like to point out […]

“Anthony Delcollo calls impeachment ‘crass political stunt’ – Supports Trump 1000%”

Anthony Delcollo, like all DE Republicans, will never come clean about his ongoing support for Trump. The headline above is not one you should expect to read, and that is something Democrats will have to confront over the next 403 days.

There is only one issue on the ballot in November 2020, and it is an issue that the leadership of Delaware’s Republican Party; Ken Simpler, Anthony Delcollo, Cathy Cloutier and Mike Ramone, will strive to never address directly. So I’m asking once more – how do we get every Republican running for office to answer for Trump?

Silence is support for this lawless President. Republican elected officials at every level are propping up Trump. All Republican office holders are accomplices unless and until they clearly confront the crimes of Donald J Trump.

Dear Uncle Wingnut,

Dear Uncle Wingnut,

I’m going to ask you a question, and I need you to keep an open mind and let me get the whole question out before you start replying. Okay?

Okay. Imagine a President got elected who wasn’t a Republican or Democrat. Let’s say his name is Kevin, and President Kevin has NO connection to anyone or anything that happened before he was elected. He is totally new on the scene. No political affiliations whatsoever.

Imagine that President Kevin is coming up for re-election and it was discovered that President Kevin withheld aid to a country and pressured that country to investigate his political rivals sex life. Let’s say his rival’s name is Larry.

Because it is illegal to try and get value from a foreign government, and because the “opposition research” into Larry’s sex life is a thing of value, we would agree that President Kevin broke the law, right?

But beyond that, we agree that having other countries involved in our elections and taking part in trying to damage candidates is wrong, right?

Okay. Finally…and thank you for not interrupting…Imagine that President Kevin was a Democrat all along and Larry was a Republican. We would agree that President Kevin broke the law, and should be removed from office, right?

Song of the Day 9/26: The Black Keys, “Tell Me Lies”

Filed in National by on September 26, 2019 0 Comments

I didn’t choose this because Republicans have stepped up the pace of their lying this week. OK, that’s a lie. But I also chose it because it’s a relatively new tune (released in June) by one of the few bands still playing something that sounds like rock. The whole “Let’s Rock” album is worth a […]

DL Open Thread 9/26

The whistleblower complaint has been released. The upshot: It’s not just the phone call that triggered concern, it was White House efforts to cover it up. In other words, they’re simultaneously arguing that the call was innocent and that they had every right not to let the public, or history, know about it. The entire […]

Song of the Day 9/25: George Jones, “The King Is Gone (So Are You)”

Filed in National by on September 25, 2019 2 Comments

My biggest gripe about Ken Burn’s country music documentary so far: Not enough George Jones. Best country singer ever IMHO. Maybe tonight’s finale will treat his long decline. He sang a lot of songs lamenting the bottle, but none of the others offer the pathos of what this supposed novelty song. Ol’ George isn’t lamenting […]

Thoughts on the Ukraine Call That Broke the Camel’s Back UPDATE: Are There Trump Tapes?

Filed in National by on September 25, 2019 14 Comments

I’ve been reading the summary of the Ukraine call released by the White House, and I’m surprised that anyone is surprised. It all sounds like classic Trump to me. And it’s nice to see what finally motivated Democrats to move — threats to their ability to get elected. In other words, naked self-interest. One revelation […]

DL Open Thread 9/25

Now that Nancy Pelosi has finally overcome the fear of monsters under her bed, pundits are writing pieces on how the Democrats might screw it up. At least the headlines won’t say “Democrats in disarray” for a while. As this piece points out, Trump’s “explanations” of the Ukraine phone call have been all over the […]

Thank You Senator Townsend

Thank You Senator Townsend

On his Facebook page Bryan Townsend linked to this Krugman NYT OpEd which calls out Republican leadership in DC for their cowardice and fruadulent superpatriotism, and makes a point I’ve been making – there are no innocent Republicans in office. Silence is support for Trump.  Yet almost all G.O.P. politicians seem perfectly fine with Trump’s […]

Pelosi’s insistence on bi-partisan impeachment was the last gasp of Democratic “bipartisanship uber alles”

Pelosi’s insistence on bi-partisan impeachment was the last gasp of Democratic “bipartisanship uber alles”

Until recently Pelosi insisted that impeachment could only go forward if Republicans signed on. That’s Coonsian nonsense on its face. It shouldn’t take buy-in from the lunatic caucus for Democrats to their job under the constitution.

It is the kind of antiquated thinking that allowed Republican Senate minorities to block anything they wanted to block. It is the kind of antiquated thinking that Joe Scar still cheers for from his lofty MSNBC morning show ivory tower – but it isn’t the type of thinking that makes sense given reality of Trump’s ongoing criminal activities.

Whatever happens good riddance to sham, one-way bipartisanship which had Democrats giving away everything while getting nothing.

Song of the Day 9/24: Gillian Welch, “Elvis Presley Blues”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on September 24, 2019 0 Comments

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings released this song on her second album, “Time (The Revelator),” and the sparse arrangement and their muted harmonies perfectly captures the sad ending of a legend whose greatest triumphs were long behind him. The song is much admired but seldom covered. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, even playing it acoustic, […]
