Song of the Day 4/4: Wet Leg, “Chaise Longue”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on April 4, 2022

This song went viral on social media last summer, and mainstream media picked up on it by autumn, but I didn’t hear it until last week, and it cracked me up.

Wet Leg is Rhian Teasdale, who sings this tune, and Hester Chambers, two friends who live on the Isle of Wight, just off England’s southern coast. Teasdale wrote the lyrics — those of a certain age will recognize the “buttered muffin” quote from Tina Fey’s seminal film “Mean Girls” — while lying on a chaise longue that belonged to Chambers’ grandfather, and they shot the video themselves.

They’ve released three more videos since in advance of their eponymous album, which drops on Friday. “Wet Dream” was released back in September.

  1. Since I’ve heard the song a zillion times on XPN, I’m already sick of it.

Not quite ‘Mambo #5’ sick of it, but the same vibe. More or less a novelty number.

Hey, doesn’t take much to annoy me.

First time I’ve heard it, sadly what has been listened to cannot be unheard again. As ‘bulo said it’s a novelty tune.

    No accounting for taste.

    • I REVEL in bad taste.

I like the other songs I’ve heard, so they’re not a one-off for me. Didn’t know they were big on XPN since I haven’t been listening. No car means no radio listening.

I am considering another EU country and not having a car when I get there, Smaller city but urban and good train service. Working out ok for you?

          • Alby says:

Of course I can’t speak to the situation elsewhere. Paris Metro gets me most places I need to go if I can’t walk there, but I walk almost everywhere. The only American city I can compare it to is New York in terms of ability to exist without an auto and being able to get groceries etc. on foot.

I don’t know how many cities have such an extensive subway system. Buses are fine too, but in winter or rain I’d rather be underground.

If I need to carry something large there’s always Uber vans.

I’m assuming “seminal film” is a pun. Didn’t want it to go unnoticed!
