About pandora

A stay-at-home mom with an obsession for National politics.

Lions and Tigers and… Witches? Oh My.

So much for those Libertarian values.  Bob Barr, Libertarian extraordinaire, is worried about things that go bump in the night.

The US Air Force, at no less a prestigious location than the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, has taken the notion of religious tolerance to a new level, in creating an outdoor worship area for pagans.  The site, apparently sacred to pagans, consists of an inner and an outer circle of large stones.  I’m sorry, but this truly is hilarious.  Don’t get me wrong, if someone “has little or no religion and delights in sensual pleasures and material goods,” which is the definition of a “pagan,” then I say live and let live.

But I have to tell you, if I were in the Air Force and was being commanded by an officer who practices hedonism as a religion (another part of the definition of “pagan”), and who dances around a circle of stones in the woods carrying a lighted candle, I would be more than a little worried about following him into battle.

Far be it for me to point out that following someone who believes in ingesting the body and blood of another deity into battle is just hunky-dory.

Just sayin’.

CPAC Childish Behavior Separates the Boys from the Girls

Aren’t they adorable!

The Washington Scene reports that this year’s CPAC will prominently feature a Nancy Pelosi piñata and a Harry Reid punching bag for guests to take turns beating

Boringly predictable, but I simply adored this next line – because it says so much!

“We’re hoping to have the females whack the piñata and males try their hand at a Harry Reid punching bag,”

Who knew hitting someone with a stick is more feminine?

Climate Change = Weird Weather

Funny how last weeks snow storms were all the rage on Right blogs while not a word was uttered concerning the unseasonably warm weather in Vancouver.  Typically Republican.  And while I think Thomas Friedman’s NYT Op-Ed is a step in the right direction I doubt it will change any minds on the Right – mainly because the Right doesn’t respect  or understand science.  They are quite happy in the Dark Ages, thank you very much.  Also why trudge through data by a physicist, Joseph Romm, when you can just listen to Donald Trump.  Talk about the dumbing down of America.

But back to Friedman’s article.

When you see lawmakers like Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina tweeting that “it is going to keep snowing until Al Gore cries ‘uncle,’ ” or news that the grandchildren of Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma are building an igloo next to the Capitol with a big sign that says “Al Gore’s New Home,” you really wonder if we can have a serious discussion about the climate-energy issue anymore.

That’s the point.  The last thing Republicans want is a “serious discussion about the climate-energy issue.”  They simply don’t have the facts – or the intellectual capabilities – to understand science.  Reading, and then discussing, scientific research is beyond them, and why bother when it’s snowing.  To them global warming can be dismissed by the need to wear a jacket.  And the regularity they get away with these nonsense arguments is breath-taking.

They truly don’t understand science – which probably explains the glaring lack of scientists among their ranks.  So here is how science works (in a nutshell):  Disproving is as important as proving.  Got that?

The main problem for scientists is countering a political attack that cherry picks their research and/or lies about what they said.  My family is bursting with scientists and environmental engineers.  Ever try talking to these people?  Needless to say, their points and research aren’t designed for a world dominated by sound bites and bumper stickers.  Or simply, science is complex.  Which, again, brings us back to Friedman’s idea.

Although there remains a mountain of research from multiple institutions about the reality of climate change, the public has grown uneasy. What’s real? In my view, the climate-science community should convene its top experts — from places like NASA, America’s national laboratories, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford, the California Institute of Technology and the U.K. Met Office Hadley Centre — and produce a simple 50-page report. They could call it “What We Know,” summarizing everything we already know about climate change in language that a sixth grader could understand, with unimpeachable peer-reviewed footnotes.

At the same time, they should add a summary of all the errors and wild exaggerations made by the climate skeptics — and where they get their funding. It is time the climate scientists stopped just playing defense. The physicist Joseph Romm, a leading climate writer, is posting on his Web site, climateprogress.org, his own listing of the best scientific papers on every aspect of climate change for anyone who wants a quick summary now.

I think this is a good idea.  I also know that this 50 page report won’t matter to the neanderthals on the right – mainly because they won’t read it.  But I can’t worry about them.  They are a lost cause who deny science with the same fervor they deny Obama’s birth certificate.   Amazing how physical evidence and research carry no weight with a group who insist that everything in the Bible is true and must be taken on faith.

I’d be happy to leave science to the scientists, but that’s not the way this game is shaping up.  It’s political.  So give me that 50 page report and I’ll fight that political fight because scientists have more important things to do than fight “intellectual giants” like Donald Trump and DeMint.

Snow Days

I drove my daughter to school this morning and the entire time I was thinking… why are schools open?  For while the main roads are clear the side roads are a rutted mess of ice which turned my normally 10 minute round-trip into a harrowing 35 minute keep-my-wits-about-me experience.

There’s no doubt about it.  The side roads are dangerous, and the fresh coating of snow – already laying on the clear roads – doesn’t bode well.

While it isn’t my favorite thing to do, I don’t mind driving in snow.  But this morning’s commute wasn’t about snow.  It was about what happens to snow on roads that haven’t seen a plow.  It’s about two lane roads that turn into one.  It’s about so much snow piled up on street corners that school children’s only choice in getting around these mountains is walking in the streets – streets with drivers who realize that if they stop they probably won’t move again.

It also occurred to me that if school hadn’t been canceled last week it would have been canceled today.  Which makes me question where safety ranked in the decision to open schools.  After my morning drive I’m thinking safety wasn’t #1 on the list.  My guess is that it ranked third, after the dilemma of making up snow days and the upcoming DSTP.  Think I’m over-reacting?  Then ask yourself if last weeks snow storm had been our first and only storm would school be open today?

I’m guessing… no.

Utah Considering Plan To Make 12th Grade… Optional

Is it any wonder we have an education problem?

The sudden buzz over the relative value of senior year stems from a recent proposal by state Sen. Chris Buttars that Utah make a dent in its budget gap by eliminating the 12th grade…

…Buttars has since toned down the idea, suggesting instead that senior year become optional for students who complete their required credits early. He estimated the move could save up to $60 million, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

This proposal strikes me as odd, especially coming from a group that constantly uses Think about the children mantra along with their critiques on the problems with public education.  My first thought when reading this was… if children have completed their required classes by Junior year why not up the requirements?

And while I don’t dispute “Senorits” exists, I do question the priorities.  It’s as if we’re willing to sacrifice the future generation for the present generation.  God forbid we raise taxes when we could simply lower the education bar to save money.  I’ll say it again, if Senior year is considered a waste of time why not add value?

That said, given we’re living in a time when a degree from Harvard or Stanford is something to sneer at I can’t say I’m surprised by this proposal.   Although I am having trouble reconciling the Right’s disdain for intelleckchewals with their I’m proud of my Honor Student bumper stickers.  There’s a big disconnect here, and I have to wonder what message their children are receiving.  Mixed?  Study hard, but getting into Harvard sucks?

It just seems to me that instead of promoting a way to get kids to ditch school our efforts would be better spent in finding ways to make Senior year really matter.  As my Conservative friends like to say, the children are our future – not that they walk the talk when it comes to valuing intelligence or science, but it does fit ever-so-nicely on a bumper sticker.

Breaking: President Clinton Hospitalized

Via TPM:

We have very little information so far. But President Clinton was hospitalized at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital this afternoon. It’s not clear whether it was on an emergency basis or not. But we have unconfirmed reports that it was for a heart related procedure.

Just heard this on MSNBC as well.  Hope all is well.

Palin Couldn’t Pass A Literacy Test

When I was in high school and faced with an essay question I couldn’t begin to answer my standard response was to fill up the paper with enough nonsense in the hope that I’d accidentally hit upon some point that would save me.  It rarely worked.  That said, take a look at this exchange between Palin and Wallace and tell me what she is saying.  Extra points for attempting to diagram these sentences – and I use that word loosely.

Via Digby:

WALLACE: What do you think of Barack Obama’s presidency so far?

PALIN: He has some misguided decisions that he is making that he is expecting us to just kind of sit down and shut up and accept, and many of us are not going to sit down and shut up. We’re going to say no, we do not like this…

WALLACE: Wait, wait, where’s he saying sit down and shut up?

PALIN: In a general just kind of general persona I think that he has when he’s up there at, I’ll call it a lectern. When he is up there and he is telling us basically, I know best, my people here in the White House know best, and we are going to tell you that yes, you do want this essentially nationalized health care system and we’re saying, no, we don’t. And the messages are not being received by Barack Obama. So I think instead of lecturing, he needs to stop and he needs to listen on health care issues. On national security, this perceived lackadaisical approach that he has to dealing with the terrorists. We’re saying that concerns us and we’re going to speak up about it and please don’t allow this persona to continue where you do try to make us feel like we need to just sit down, shut up and accept what you’re doing to us.

In a general just kind of general persona I think that he has when he’s up there at, I’ll call it a lectern. WTF is that?

The woman has diarrhea of the mouth.  She just throws sh*t at the wall and hopes it sticks.  She is a joke – a dangerous joke – who has been elevated by a lazy media to heights she doesn’t deserve.  Personally, I’m sick to death of her, but ignoring her isn’t an option.  Her appeal, imo, is that she makes people comfortable with their own ignorance.  Dangerous stuff, indeed.

It Shouldn’t Matter, But I Bet It Will – Prop 8 Judge Outed

Via kos:

The biggest open secret in the landmark trial over same-sex marriage being heard in San Francisco is that the federal judge who will decide the case, Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker, is himself gay.

Screams of outrage from the Right in five… four… three…

Never mind that Judge Walker was assigned the case at random.  Never mind that it’s been perfectly okay for white male judges to determine the fate of women and minorities for centuries.  Personally, I’m sick of it.  Sotomayor’s temperament, anyone?  And if you feel I’m jumping the gun on this, forgive me.  I know what’s coming.

Ho Hum

FYI:  It’s snowing… again.

Really cool time-lapsed video of snow piling up during the last storm!

When The Punishment Doesn’t Fit The Crime, Or… It’s The Over-Reaction, Stupid

Doodling on a school desk is wrong.  Hauling a 12 year old girl out of school in handcuffs for doodling her name on her desk in erasable marker is worse.
