Republicans Got Nothin’ and They Know It

Filed in National by on April 14, 2021 4 Comments

It seems Jim Clyburn knew what he was doing after all. When the South Carolina Congressman endorsed Joe Biden just before the South Carolina primary and Biden carried the state, most progressives took it as a sign that the Democratic Party wasn’t ready for a progressive administration. It turns out that wasn’t the point at […]

This “Patriot” Group’s Focus On School Board Elections is Troubling

This “patriotsfordelaware.com” site reads like typical GOP dumbassery with all the flags and calls to empty flag worship.  But there is something troubling going on here.  The focus appears to be on electing “patriots” Q-anon believers and gun-safety opponents to Delaware’s school boards. That is worrisome because school board elections have miserable turnout, so a […]

Song of the Day 4/13: Less Than Jake, “The State of Florida”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on April 13, 2021 0 Comments

As pop-punk band Less Than Jake noted in this 2008 song, Florida is sinking into the sea. I would note that the process isn’t going fast enough. Unlike, say, Neil Young writing about Southern men, LTJ’s critique came from inside — the band’s album “GNV FLA,” released in 2008, is named for their hometown, Gainesville. […]

Dear Republicans: You Have Already Been Replaced

Filed in National by on April 13, 2021 1 Comment

Why are Republicans suckers for every half-witted conspiracy theory ever concocted? Consider the latest obsession of Tucker Carlson, poster boy for mediocre white dudes, the so-called Great Replacement theory. It holds that Democrats want to replace white Americans with immigrants, apparently so they can win elections. To start with, this is just recycled Hitler, who […]

The news is tiring again today, but some light breaks through and change is possible as Maryland repealed the state’s police bill of rights.

Also, on this date in 1743 Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the United States (1801-09), was born in Albemarle County, Virginia. All drunk on the Enlightenment, he wrote “all men are created equal”. Of course he meant American born white men of property were equal to Brittish born white men of property, but we commoners had our own interpretation. And a fellow commoner named Abe Lincoln worked to lock in the more expansive meaning, so Happy Birthday Thomas, you red-headed devil!

Song of the Day 4/12: Sinéad O’Connor, “Black Boys on Mopeds”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment, National by on April 12, 2021 0 Comments

The continuing plague of police brutality against Black men has kept this song relevant more than 30 years after its release. Colin Roach was a 21-year-old Black man living in the London borough of Hackney in 1983, when police tried to pull him over, apparently thinking the moped he was driving was stolen. Hackney, a […]

Very lackluster open thread this morning. All the more room for you to thread away. But first…. colonialism and slavery are still super popular in the the USA. How else can you explain the way we train our cops?

The hot rumor making the rounds is that Becky Lynch will return tonight, likely in a truck, following her being away for almost a year away as she became a mom.  Looks like there’s a ready-made feud with Bayley awaiting her.   Tonight’s ‘celebrity’ is Logan Paul.  Yet another media creation who is ‘famous for being […]

We all know that Matt Gaetz like to fuck 17-year-olds, but did you know that his real job is fucking the public? It seems the sex scandal is somehow related to a scheme to pay people to enter races to siphon off Democratic votes, one of which actually made a difference in getting a Republican […]

El Somnambulo Reviews Wrestlemania 37-Night One

Filed in Arts and Entertainment, Featured by on April 10, 2021 2 Comments

An utterly insipid pre-game panel featuring one Kayla Braxton as the host; Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler, dressed like a maitre d’ at a red gravy joint; Booker T: JBL, and somebody named Peter Rosenberg. It’s been raining in Tampa, but it appears that it will stop in time for the kickoff of the show. Drew […]

If Jason330 was the Chauvin Prosectuor – A Play in One Act

Filed in National by on April 10, 2021 1 Comment

The prosecuting attorneys are doing a fine job, and don’t need any help from me, but if I was on the prosecution team, this is how the rest of the trial would go down.

[Sound of a gavel]

Judge: Let’s continue.

ME: Your honor, can we let the jury take five while I ask you and the defense team a quick question?

Judge: This is highly unusual, but I’ll allow it. But be careful McCoy.

[Bailiffs remove the jury.]

ME: Ha. Good ‘Law and Order’ reference, judge. Anyway… Chauvin’s defense attorney, Mr. Nelson is doing a shit job. All he seems to have is this idea that George Floyd died of a drug induced heart attack and not a 9 minute to knee to the throat as MANY experts have now testified.

Judge: Please get to your point.

ME: My point is that we can wrap this up right quit if I put my knee on Mr. Nelson’s neck for 9 minutes. If he lives – he is right and Chauvin is innocent. If he dies, then Chauvin killed Floyd and he is guilty as fuck.

Judge: I’m going to admonish you not to use profanity in my courtroom, but [turning to Nelson] he has a point Mr. Nelson. Your client is guilty as fuck. This may be the Hail Mary pass you need to win this thing.

NELSON: No thanks, your honor. We’ll continue to pray that one of the jurors is a Trumper and is going to try some jury nullification or something.

Judge: Ok then. Bring the jury in and let’s try and get out of here by five tonight.

Song of the Day 4/10: Billy Joel, “Captain Jack”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on April 10, 2021 1 Comment

A song for the Delaware Republican Party, which, like the protagonist of this song, has been reduced to just jacking off. In a way, Philadelphia — in particular this live 1972 performance of what became one of his signature tunes — is responsible for Billy Joel’s subsequent career. WMMR-FM staged an hour-long performance at Sigma […]
