PPP: Carney Leads Urquhart By 11

PPP just released new numbers for the U.S. House race showing John Carney up by 11%, 48-37.

Carney begins the general election with a 48-37 lead over Glen Urquhart. In contrast to most races across the country Carney has a more unified base, winning 75% of Democrats to Urquhart’s 66% of Republicans. Urquhart does have a 38-36 lead with independents but that’s not nearly as large as most GOP candidates across the country have and certainly not as large as he needs to win a strongly Democratic leaning state like Delaware.

These numbers do represent a tightening since PPP’s last poll of the race in August which found Carney ahead 48-30. What’s important to note about those numbers is that Carney has remained steady. Urquhart is just increasing his support as he becomes better known and locks up more of the Republican base.

Carney has solid favorability numbers with 34% seeing him favorably and 24% unfavorably. Interestingly Urquhart has pulled even with Carney in name recognition and he’s seen positively by 30% of voters and negatively by 29%.

This is another race where we can’t afford to be complacent. Full poll results here.

Urquhart Wants You To Remember…He’s Crazy Too

Christine O’Donnell has been getting a lot of attention for her many years of crazy statements on television. Glen Urquhart doesn’t have a long television archive to study but Glen Urquhart is just as crazy as Christine O’Donnell.

“Do you know where does this phrase ‘separation of church and state’ come from…does anybody know…I told you…actually that exact phrase is not in Jefferson’s letter to the Danbury Baptists…he was reassuring them that the federal government wouldn’t trample on their religion…the exact phrase ‘separation of church and state’ came out of Adolph Hitler’s mouth…that’s where it comes from…the next time your liberal friends talk about ‘separation of church and state’ ask them why they’re Nazis.” – Congressional Candidate Glen Urquhart, April 2010.

Glen Urquhart Is A Happy Man Right Now

Glen Urquhart is a happy man right now. He’s been quietly riding Christine O’Donnell’s conservative coattails. He’s been relatively controversy-free, except for his Nazi/liberal gaffe. He’s a version of Christine O’Donnell without the perennial loser stink. Just like Christine O’Donnell, Urquhart has now gotten the endorsement of Concerned Women for America.

No word from Sarah Palin on this race, but the political action committee of a conservative Christian group — Concerned Women for America — today announced its support for Republican congressional candidate Glen Urquhart of Rehoboth Beach.

The group, founded by Beverly LaHaye — wife of “Left Behind” author and Christian Coalition founder Timothy LaHaye — opposes abortion, civil rights for gays and lesbians, same-sex marriage, pornography, human trafficking, and embryonic stem cell research. The group promotes religious liberty, strong national security, and has commended the tea party movement in recent press releases.

I’m still highly skeptical of Christine O’Donnell’s chances on Tuesday. Urquhart could be a protest vote for Republicans who want to vote for someone very conservative but have doubts about Christine O’Donnell.

Explain This To Me

I know that a lot of political rhetoric is untethered from reality but I find the Republican rhetoric on jobs completely puzzling. They talk about “spending cuts” and balanced budgets somehow creating jobs. Even they know that investment brings jobs. Look at what Michele Rollins said in yesterday’s debate:

Rollins said her family’s business enterprises have provided thousands of jobs — at the Brandywine Town Center and at Dover Downs, where her late husband, John W. Rollins Sr., also built a 430-room hotel.

So they built a hotel and built the Brandywine Town Center. Then they hired people to work in it. I get this — this is how jobs are created. Someone has a vision and they spend money to make it happen, hoping that they will make this money back in time. Most people do this on credit since this kind of investment is expensive (even the very rich) and most people don’t have spare cash laying around.

So why do Republicans say the U.S. must not spend any money on domestic job creation? How does cutting services help anyone get a job? In fact, a lot of people have lost jobs in budget cutting – state workers. To answer my own question – Republicans do this because it works for them. I guess my real question is why do people believe them?

Rollins/Urquhart Debate Open Thread

I was unable to attend today’s Rollins-Urquhart debate because of a work committment but several of you are either listening or attended. Use this thread to discuss what you’ve heard during the debate.

From what I gather on the Twitter coverage:

Rollins calls herself pro-life but supports abortion rights (she specifically mentioned rape victims). I’ve seen a lot of pro-choice activists actually use this type of language “pro-choice is pro-life.”

Rollins said that the Park51 Islamic center had the right to be built and it was a local NYC issue. Urquhart doesn’t think it should be built.

Urquhart hammered Rollins hard on WTC and TARP. It sounds like he put her on the defensive.

Urquhart thinks national debt is our greatest threat. (Greater than al Qaeda?)

Glen Urquhart’s Sexist Commercial

Commenter phil brought our attention to a radio ad being played on WGMD in support of Glen Urquhart.

Glen Urquhart’s “Fox” Commercial

(click on the link to get the audio)

In the ad a woman’s voice is heard asking for a guard job at a henhouse. The male voice (I assume a rooster) says “you’re a fox” to which the woman’s voice replies “I’m a former fox.” I actually think the ad is fairly effective otherwise, it communicates that Michele Rollins is a hypocrite, railing about bailouts while accepting them herself.

You make the call – is this a sly innuendo to Ms. Rollins past as a beauty queen and implying that she is no more?

Suggestions On What To Wear

Glen Urquhart and Michele Rollins will be debating on August 31. What should I wear? Should I wear a Miss Jamaica crown or my Nazi uniform? Decisions, decisions…

Republican congressional candidates Michele Rollins and Glen Urquhart will debate Aug. 31 on WDEL radio. Peter MacArthur will moderate the debate, which starts at 8 a.m. in Widener Law School’s Ruby R. Vale Moot Courtroom and will be broadcast live on WDEL (1150 AM) and streamed live on WDEL’s web site. The public is welcome to attend.

Urquhart Claims To Lead Rollins

Heh, several days after I posted my analysis of the PPP numbers for Republicans the NJ jumps on board (of course ignoring DL):

Glen Urquhart, billing himself as the choice of true conservatives, found comfort in a poll released last week on a liberal blog — the Daily Kos. That poll, done by the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling, showed that Urquhart would fare just about as well as Michele Rollins — the GOP’s endorsed candidate — against Carney.

The article says Rollins doubts this poll. That’s probably why she’s unleashing her campaign ads now. I missed this one, Urquhart has an internal poll giving him a 5-7 point lead over Rollins.

So last Thursday, in his New Castle County campaign headquarters — the Newark home of John Stabley — he released results of a survey his campaign paid for that showed him leading Rollins by 5 to 7 percentage points in the primary. It showed, he said, that he can beat Rollins statewide, not just in Sussex County, by appealing to the Judeo-Christian values he says most Americans share.

Apparently Urquhart’s poll was a push poll.

Urquhart’s pollster — ccAdvertising — said it sent its questions by a voice-activated phone system to more than 16,000 Republican households. The full results of the survey were not released — much of it was meant for marketing purposes only, campaign staffers said — but several pointed questions were asked depending on whether the respondent favored Urquhart or Rollins.

The questions referred to donations Rollins made to now-Vice President Joe Biden during one of his re-election campaigns for the U.S. Senate and another to a political action committee (The Wish List) supporting female Republican candidates who would defend abortion as a woman’s choice. Calling her pro-abortion and “Heiress Rollins,” the questions linked Rollins to millions in bank bailout money while she was a director for Wilmington Trust Co., and said she made millions in the gambling industry.

Rollins response is also pretty amusing.

The questions made many people hang up the phone, Rollins said Monday.

Of course, Rollins hasn’t released any kind of internal polling showing she’s ahead. I find it hard to believe that with her warchest she doesn’t have any polling numbers. Rollins also seems pretty defensive in the article (go read to see her answers about donating to Joe Biden and her position on abortion), which still leaves the impression that Rollins is on the ropes and the Urquhart is surging.

Over on Glen Urquhart’s campaign website (LOL, Michele Rollins’s website is the first Google hit when you look for Urquhart on Google) he has a press release on the poll.

The statewide survey of registered Delaware Republican voters assessed the views of Republicans planning to vote in the September 14th Primary Election and had 16,803 participants.

You have to be kidding, 16K participants? Wow. I’d say that’s statistically significant if true. Anyway…

Brian McAllister of ccAdvertising stated, “In the race for Congress in Delaware, among registered Republicans, Glen Urquhart polls at 38.96%, a 7.01% lead over establishment candidate Michele Rollins, who polls at 31.95%. The undecided’s, who will determine the winner of this race, stand at 29.09%.”

In further exploration of the issues, the survey determined that 69.11% of respondents who do not intend to vote for Glen Urquhart would be more likely to trust Glen Urquhart over Michele Rollins on the issue of life; 65.61% would be more likely to trust Glen Urquhart over Michele Rollins to cut taxes and spending in Washington; and 73.54% would be more likely to vote for Glen Urquhart over Michele Rollins knowing that he is political outsider, small businessman and champion of Delaware’s family values.

Urquharts press release cites 2 polls, the other poll is none other than the PPP Poll:

The second poll by the Democrat polling company Public Policy Polling shows Rollins and Urquhart in a virtual tie when considering the opinion of a cross-section of Democrat, Republican and Independent Delaware voters at 32% – 30% respectively, with a margin of error of 4%.

*raised eyebrow* I’d like to see how that analysis was done.

Anyway, this sure does bring up some interesting dynamics for the general election. Until now Rollins-Castle and Urquhart-O’Donnell have been seen as “teams.” I had always assumed that Urquhart was trying to ride a bit on O’Donnell’s coattails since she’s better known because of her previous runs for office. That situation may be reversed. O’Donnell may be better known still, but she definitely wants his voters to come out and vote for her as well.

Castle, on the other hand, has to be a little nervous about sharing the top of the ticket with Glen “liberals are Nazis” Urquhart since Castle needs Democratic support to win his election. I’ll bet Urquhart has said critical things of Castle in the past as well. Would Castle and Urquhart be able to campaign together in a unity ticket?

Pallin’ Around With Chavez

Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez is one the rightwing’s favorite boogiemen. So, guess who dumped a bunch of Venezuelan oil stock before announcing their political run? If you guessed multi-millionaire government welfare queen Michele Rollins, you’d be right!

A wealthy Republican running for Delaware’s at-large House seat dumped a large investment in Venezuela’s state-run oil company as she was readying paperwork during her run for Congress.

Michele Rollins owned a bond worth between $250,000 and $500,000 in Petroleos de Venezuela SA, the megalithic oil entity controlled by Hugo Chavez’s government. She sold the asset, earning between $50,000 and $100,000, as she was preparing financial disclosure forms to run for Congress, according to her campaign.

I’m so glad Michele Rollins is dedicated to her core principles – making as much money for herself as possible.

PPP Delaware Poll: Republicans

One of the disappointing things about the newly-released PPP Poll was that the Republican primaries were not polled. There’s plenty of raw numbers to look at though. Can we get any hints of how the primaries might go from the raw data? Let’s take a look.

PPP has broken down the approval numbers several ways. One way was by who the voter chose for president in the 2008 election. How do the Republican candidates stack up?

McCain voters Favorable/Unfavorable/Not Sure/Net Favorable (Favorable-Unfavorable)
Mike Castle – 54/31/16/+12
Christine O’Donnell – 32/29/39/+3
Michele Rollins – 22/22/56/0
Glenn Urquhart – 23/18/59/+5

This crude analysis shows that Castle beats O’Donnell handily. O’Donnell’s name recognition is still low so she definitely has room to move up however her favorables are low. The Rollins/Urquhart is a toss-up with a slight lean towards Urquhart. Both Rollins and Urquhart are both largely unknown so this race is quite fluid.

PPP also broke down the numbers by self-reported ideology. Republicans in Delaware would probably label themselves as either “moderate” or “conservative” (I realize that there’s a lot of overlap of moderates with both Independents and Democrats).

Conservatives Favorable/Unfavorable/Not Sure/Net Favorable
Mike Castle – 46/39/15/+7
Christine O’Donnell – 37/23/40/+14
Michele Rollins – 21/19/59/+2
Glenn Urquhart – 25/14/61/+9

O’Donnell has her best showing among conservatives but still trails Castle. Despite rumors to the contrary, Castle is popular among conservatives. Urquhart has a clear advantage with conservatives over Rollins.

What about moderates?
Moderates Favorable/Unfavorable/Not Sure/Net Favorable
Mike Castle – 56/25/18/+31
Christine O’Donnell – 15/38/47/-23
Michele Rollins – 16/27/57/-9
Glenn Urquhart – 12/21/67/-9

Castle is beloved by self-reported moderates. All other Republican candidates are in negative territory, which shows why Republicans have trouble winning in Delaware. Despite having the News Journal declare her a moderate, Rollins is clearly not catching on. She has the same rating with mderates as Glenn Urquhart. I assume Urquhart’s negatives will go up with moderates once they watch Urquhart’s Nazi comments.

One last analysis – how do the Republican candidates rate among Republicans?

Republicans Favorable/Unfavorable/Not Sure/Net Favorable
Mike Castle – 60/25/16/+35
Christine O’Donnell – 34/29/37/+5
Michele Rollins – 27/17/57/+10
Glenn Urquhart – 23/17/59/+6

Castle is popular with Republicans no matter which way you look at the numbers. O’Donnell has an uphill climb. Rollins finally comes out ahead of Urquhart in this match-up so I call their race a toss-up as of now.

What advice do you give each of these candidates? My advice:
Castle – Ignore O’Donnell, keep doing what you’re doing
O’Donnell – Go relentlessly negative to drive down Castle’s numbers. Be sure to get your base support of conservatives out to vote. If you have money, now would be a good time to spend it.
Rollins – Quit sitting on your load of cash and start spending some, otherwise you could lose to Urquhart. Since Urquhart is probably the conservatives’ candidate you have nothing to lose by moving to the left and appealing to moderates. Try to link yourself to Castle more aggressively.
Urquhart – Spend money to raise your name recognition & profile & make sure conservatives come to vote in the primaries

Delaware PPP Poll Results

PPP has just released their poll results for Delaware. There are a lot of results, so I’m sure this will lead to a lot of blog posts. Here’s the headline numbers:

DE-Sen

The latest numbers are very similar to the Rasmussen numbers from the last two weeks. Castle has a solid lead, but remains under 50%. Coons is still largely unknown and has more room to grow.

DE-AL

Carney leads Rollins 48-31 and leads Urquhart 48-30. Carney leads either Rollins of Urquhart in every county.

Carney’s Favorable/unfavorable/Not Sure: 31/24/45
Rollins F/U/NS: 18/25/57
Urquhart F/U/NS: 15/20/65

None of the candidates have extremely high name recognition. Carney’s is the best, but it’s still below that of Chris Coons despite his stint as Lt. Governor.

Other favorable/unfavorable/not sure from the survey:
President Obama: 50/44/6
Senator Carper: 47/33/20
Senator Kaufman: 37/30/33
Governor Markell: 50/32/18

So the winner of the popularity contest is *drumroll* Mike Castle with +19% approval! Close behind is Governor Markell with +18, followed by Tom Carper with +14, Senator Kaufman with +7 and President Obama with +6.

John Carney Carves A Niche For Himself

John Carney may be the quiet candidate, but he’s quietly carving a niche for himself in the Delaware House race. He’s very strong in environmental issues but he’s been unique in pushing a cancer initiative for Delaware. So I wasn’t surprised when last week I got this press release from Carney’s campaign:

“Just weeks ago, I outlined my intentions as Delaware’s Congressman to seek the assistance of organizations, such as the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control, to help identify federal resources to conduct a body burden study and identify the causes of cancer clusters in our state. The purpose of the study is to identify toxins that may have a link to environmental risks in our air, water, and soil which could lead to higher rates of cancer.

Based on the front page stories released by the News Journal this week, possible contaminants in Delaware’s drinking water is yet another reason why we need to do such a study. In light of the significant concerns raised, I believe we need a high level group of experts and community leaders to analyze the existing research and determine what gaps might exist. There currently doesn’t appear to be any one entity looking at all the relevant data. This group could provide a comprehensive analysis and recommend specific actions to help Delawareans avoid any environmental risks and create a level of public trust that their concerns are being addressed.

Carney is referring to the article that came out recently about issues with water quality in Delaware. I know for a fact that many people are scared and worried about their water quality. Have any other candidates discussed this issue or proposed any action?

Mike Castle – Nope
Chris Coons – Nope
Michele Rollins – Nothing
Glen Urquhart – No

So here’s a hot local issue that has a lot of people worried and upset and John Carney is the only politician discussing the problem? I couldn’t even find mention of it on Governor Markell’s website.

Michele Rollins Joins the “Let Them Eat Want Ads” Caucus

Let Them Eat Want Ads — that is what Greg Sargent has named the GOPers who cluelessly think that the reason why people are unemployed is because they get too many unemployment benefits.

Rollins was at a campaign event in Rehoboth, when she took the opportunity to remind people of how far out of touch one can be when one is accustomed to seeing the world from your porch at Rose Hall. When she was asked by a potential constituent if she would support proposed extensions to unemployment benefits:

“Truthfully I probably, lets see 99 weeks is almost two years. A few weeks shy of two years, 52, 52, 104. Probably at week 80 I would have made sure that everybody got a notice that week 99 was coming and the benefits were going to be done. Um… someone who hasn’t worked in two years, pretty hard to get energized to go back to look for a job. I know that this is a bad market and this is a bad time but you just cannot keep paying people, cannot keep taxing us to pay people to do nothing because they will continue to do nothing for a very long time and I feel we are entitled to a little more than that. Against it.”

You can hear the tape of this answer from Rollins herself here (not-embeddable, I think).

So listen up Delawareans — Michelle Rollins thinks that the reason you are unemployed for almost two years is that you are happy collecting a government check. Not that her party crashed the economy and there are way fewer houses and buildings being constructed; or that manufacturing and retail jobs have disappeared because people are still cautious about buying things. Know that her agenda if elected would be to make sure that the working families hit hard by the repub-engineered recession would be thrown an anchor.

But people who married their money couldn’t possibly grasp the plain idea that no jobs is the reason why so many don’t have jobs. And nor do they know anything about being unemployed, either. Looking for work IS a full time job.
